Lee-Speed Sporting Rifle The Lee-Speed Rifle The original incarnation of the most well known of all British service rifles was the Rifle, Magazine, Lee-Metford, adopted in just as several other major powers were adopting nitrocellulose small bore cartridges and new magazine rifles. It was named, in British convention of the era, for the bolt action of Canadian gun designer James Paris Lee and the rifling design of William Ellis Metford. Lee’s bolt action design had its antecedents in his prior Model and Remington-Lee rifles for the United States Navy, but the design made for the British was a significant improvement over these and featured a round box magazine fed by an en bloc charger, offering unheard of firepower. Metford’s gently-rounded polygonal rifling pattern had been a mainstay of the military-match world for almost two decades notably in the Gibbs-Farquharson-Metford and Deeley-Edge-Metford rifles and was regarded by many experts as being superior in accuracy and minimizing blackpowder fouling when compared to Alexander Henry’s angular rifling pattern. The Lee-Speed resulted from design improvements introduced by Joseph J. Among these were the safety lever on the bolt and alterations to the magazine to incorporate a round detachable box. My rifle was built by the firm of W. It has a long, yet light 29 inch barrel and express sights with one standing and three folding leaves, as well as a ladder sight of decorative value only.

Would the SMLE have taken the 30 odd 6? Not as it existed. The receiver and bolt and magazine well would have had to been made longer. This also assumes that the SMLE action would stand up to the higher pressure of the round. Not from the stand point of bursting but rather a slow stretching from repeated firings. Please remember that heat treatment was nowhere near the science it would become even in the s.

It varies a bit depending on factory.

This book covers, in lavish detail, the almost unbelievable issues, political drama, and shady dealings that characterized the SA80 program from start to finish.

From the beginning of development to introduction of the A2 variant, the program was characterized by corruption, incompetence, and bad engineering. The rifles, fundamentally, were still nearly 20 years old by the time the program was completed, they were still extremely heavy, and there was also no straightforward path to replacement of worn-out units.

The number of SA80s in the world was fixed, no more would ever be made. If you are like me, owning an M1 Carbine goes a lot deeper than just owning a firearm. It is about owning and collecting a piece of history. Because of that, a small group of dedicated collectors have built this site. We have compiled all the data on components and Carbines from various sources into a relational database. We have tried to make the data available as accurate as possible.

Given the absence of complete records of manufacture and sheer number of sources of data available, I guarantee you that We have made some mistakes. Please inform us of any information that you think is incorrect or missing and we will do our best to confirm and correct or add the information. On this site, you will be able to do the following: No collection is complete without an M1 Carbine. Over the past 65 years, most M1 Carbines have been arsenal rebuilt, refinished, re-barreled or repaired at least once and often several times.

Most will show signs of service often considerable and replacement of various parts. They are seldom encountered with all original parts and original finish as delivered from the manufacturer. Such “original” Carbines, even in well-used condition, are highly prized by collectors.

Which in our case we have not got? Henry Reed’s much-anthologized poem of World War II, “Naming of Parts,” concerns a British sergeant-instructor delivering a lecture to his green recruits on the various parts of a rifle. The progression of these lessons is as amusing as they are impeccably English: Reed based the poem on his experiences in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps from Early in the conflict, the British troops are under-equipped and poorly supplied:
