Once we made the decision to move to Japan, we joined a year-long Japanese night course after work, and worked hard to save money for the wedding and our travels. Our plan was to move as soon as we had enough of a monetary buffer, after wedding expenses, to be able to stay in Japan for a while without an income. We ended up on a flight to Tokyo six months after our wedding on a working holiday visa; no jobs lined up, or a permanent place to stay. That challenge did, and still, excites us. We chose Tokyo specifically as a base because of its convenience, and the diverse range of things to see and do. Tokyo has developed in a haphazard kind of way. I love that I can be on a big, open street at one moment and then be in a tiny alleyway lined with lanterns and smoky bars the next.

Australia — one of the most popular destinations for British expats — has seen most of its cities fall down the list as they become relatively cheaper to live in. Expat Resources Expat Dating One of the biggest advantages for people who do move abroad alone is the opportunity to live life to the full in their host country. Quite often this involves expat dating and having a new country full of dating prospects can be a real bonus for expat singletons. Here’s an overview of expat dating and the inherent implications. Cross cultural relationships One of the most pertinent issues you should consider before relocating as a singleton is whether you are prepared to engage in a relationship with someone from a different culture, who has a lifestyle and social values that contrast with your own.
While this may seem exciting and exotic at first, partaking in a cross-cultural relationship can be extremely challenging and you will need to invest significant time and effort into making it work. Some of the areas that will require focus and attention include the following- Communication styles Ways of expressing emotion and affection Commitment expectations Stereotypes As an expat dating a local you will also need to be prepared for the occasional imbalance in the relationship that will arise from your own lack of familiarity with the culture and local environment as compared with your partners own familiarity and comfort within it.

Making Here Home Travel-lover, reading obsessive and mum-of-two doing my best to navigate life in a different country. Over last few years I’ve been trying to make wherever ‘here’ is feel like home – from Thailand to Germany and who knows where next My mission, to paraphrase the wonderful Maya Angelou, is to thrive, and not just survive in these expat postings. And if I can help you too, by sharing my experiences and advice usually learned from having done things the hard way..
So, a bit about me. My career was in marketing and change management and I worked for several large multinational organisations in the UK before my husband’s job took us to Thailand. And then I had to work out who I was as an expat wife. It was a challenge, but also a wonderful opportunity. When we moved to Germany, I really felt like I needed support, but it wasn’t easy to find. So, I decided to do it myself and set up ‘Making Here Home’. I offer expat coaching to other women and men on the move, to help them find themselves in their new home, and to really make the most of their time living overseas – to overcome the challenges and to maximise the opportunities.

This expat housing is like living in a small self-contained holiday village or prison, depending on your point of view. The better ones have multiple pools, restaurants, markets, and so on. Within the compounds the dress is Western, some going as far as banning any form of Saudi dress and certainly Saudis are not allowed on at all socially!
Generally accommodation on Western compounds in KSA is of reasonable quality and quite spacious. Compound living is quite expensive compared to living off compound Anywhere from , to , SAR for a 3 bed villa or even more but most westerners choose this way of life due to freedom and security as well as the facilities. I would not recommend living off-compound if you have a wife and children; at least within the compound they have relative freedom.

Where Do Expats Live in Jakarta? The first ethnic minority would be Indonesian Chinese. Expatriates represent a fraction of the population, with the main communities being Japanese, Korean, American, Australian, and European. Expats in Jakarta are spread in the whole city, but as each community tends to stay in the same areas and frequent the same spot, it is possible to get a general mapping of where they live and hang out: Many live in Pasar Baru or Sunter area.
You will find them in clubs like Immigrant or Cloud or in one of the restaurants listed here: Indian restaurants in Jakarta. Even though Americans are one of the main nationalities in Jakarta, they are not so visible. Saudis I’ve met in Jakarta come mostly for tourism. Many come to enjoy drinking alcohol and meeting with girls, far away from their wifes.
Jakarta is usually a stop on their way to Puncak. In Glodok, the Chinese Glodok are supposed to be from a lower level.
